"I had no idea what a big deal it was to get a regular part in a show that already had a pickup," says Kristin Kreuk on the phone from Smallville's Vancouver set. She's remembering the old days, before she was world-famous for playing Superman's high school crush Lana Lang. Kreuk was a just a normal girl, obsessed with the stage, when an open call for an "exotic looking girl" to play a part on Edgemont, a teen soap, started the roller-coaster ride that is Kreuk's life.
It seems like a good time to look back, since Smallville's first season is now airing on YTV, while Season 4 unfolds on the WB and City TV.
"I don't think there's any storyline I could wish to play," Kreuk muses.
"I've done pretty much everything you could want." Between Kryptonite reaction and back-from-the-dead scenes, it's true - the sc-fi element of the show has allowed the cast and creators to go on a wild ride.
Speaking of wild, you can now see Kreuk in other roles. She recently completed work on the TV movie Earthsea, an adaptation of the Ursula Q. LeGuin classic, and is working on the feature film Partition, "I'm so excited about Partition," she says of the love story set on the border between Pakistan and India.
Thanks to recent developments, returning to small-town girl Lana wasn't too hard. And Kreuk is confident she'll be playing Lana for a long time to come. "I think we'll be around for three or four more seasons, maybe even longer - who knows?"
