Superman's Girl

She makes Smallville's young Superman crazy, viewers around the world fall at her feet, in publicity; they fight for her, and in Canada, where she was born, she's a celebrity.

In this interview, Kristin talks among many things, of her passion for cinema, writing, and how without looking for it, life made her a star.

Kristin never had intentions of pursuing a career as a professional actress. It all began when producers organized a casting call in Vancouver, and almost as a joke, she attended with a group of friends. To her surprised, she was picked.

Ever since, she’s one of the leads of Edgemont and Smallville, the new TVE show that’s capturing night audiences with a Superman in plain puberty. Giving life to Lana, Kristin is the new face for a cosmetics company, and one of the greatest promises of American TV.

After your luck with the casting call, do you believe in destiny?

I am aware your way may change unexpectedly; I am very grateful for all the pile of circumstances, which led me to the casting tests. I have grown up as a person and I have found a career, which both entertains and offers me the opportunity to develop in other professional environments. I have learned to be less serious, to seize life faster and I can't imagine myself fighting for a role, just like other actors do.

Tom commented that the good thing of being far away from everything in Canada is that you can focus more on your role, because it seems Smallville’s shooting schedule is exhausting.

It’s true, but I don’t work as much as Tom does. I have time to go shopping, go out at night, and hang out with my family.

You are now the new image of a cosmetics brand. Do you like to flirt with fame?

In Vancouver, I am a celebrity, but I don’t think I am in the rest of the world. I have to confess that even though people recognize me on the streets, I don’t feel famous. I haven’t changed anything about my life. I do the same things I did before becoming an actress. I like to be famous. It’s fun.

Are you an ambitious girl?

I think it’s a flaw not to have ambition, and I have no ambition at all. In this job it’s necessary to be ambitious, but I don’t fight against everything to get what I want. I like to challenge myself as a person, and I love being an actress, but I want to do other things, be an archeologist, study the environment and write.

What kind of book would you like to write?

A fiction novel. I write poetry now, journals of my trips and work, short stories. I have a lot of things, but nothing worth it yet.

What do you like the most about Smallville right now?

For me, the second season is better than the first one, because the characters have grown and you know them. It’s easier to develop stories for them. And as actors we understand our roles much more now. The scripts deal more with the character’s relationships, and not so much with the special effects.

How do you describe Lana, your character?

She’s a very sweet girl, innocent, pretty naïve, but smart. Strong, though she has no idea what she wants to do with her life. A little bit like every teenager of her age. I talk to my sister who’s 11, and I ask her what does she want to do with her life. She has no clue. That’s how Lana feels. She’s the opposite of Chloe; who’s convinced she wants to be a reporter. Last year, I wasn’t so sure I understood my character, but it’s fabulous to see how she fights to find her way as a woman.

Do you have any plans for your vacation?

I’d like to go to Spain. It’s one of my favorite countries.

Why Spain?

I’ve never been to Spain, and I’d like to spend a couple of months traveling around the country. My mother studied in Spain, and she inculcated in my sister and me a passion for it. I love its food, the people, and the language. I’m very curious to visit all the places I’ve heard of.

Maybe you’ll fall for a Spanish guy…?

And then I’ll stay in there forever… That would be another story!

Is it difficult for you to forget that your character ends up falling in love with Clark?

That’s what makes their relationship on the show so interesting. Lana is building Clark’s confidence. She knows his secret. His inclinations and she accepts him just like he is. Their romantic relationship also changes. It’s a ping-pong game that starts with a great friendship; which will lead them to cross the line.

You have a passion for cinema. Which are your favorite movies?

Last year, I liked “Amelie” and “City of God”. I’m passionate about cinema, but only good films.

Are you the kind of girl who goes out to the movies with friends?

I don’t mind going by myself, but it’s more fun if you go with your friends. We try to influence each other. They love to read just like me, and even though we don’t read the same things, we can share our ideas.

Are your friends actors also?

No. None of them. I don’t have actors/actresses friends. I don’t tend to go out with people from work. They’re just friends.

You don’t have a relationship with your cast mates?

Yes, with Allison. She’s the only one I hang out with. The guys are wonderful. They have their own plans. They’re a little older and have their own lifestyle.

Is it true Tom and Michael like to play jokes while shooting?

It’s incredible. They spent all day playing pranks, and sometimes practical jokes, but luckily, they’ve treated me good. Michael brings such good humor to the show. Something you need after long hours of shooting.

You said you would like to write. Would you talk to the show writers and help out?

I’ve never been able to write a dialogue. I’d love to write scripts, but it’s difficult. I’d say I am a descriptive writer. Something different to TV scripts.

Publicity Image

The actress is the image of a well-known cosmetics brand who sells naturalness and freshness. Kristin comments: “We are young, and we don’t need tons of makeup nor dressing with tiny, tight clothes. You have to be yourself, and know to be young. That’s what I try to promote.”
