Series Zap

The female star of Smallville, Kristin Kreuk has done the front page of numerous magazines. But, this very pretty young girl shows a shy side in spite of her popularity. For Series Zap, she recalls her start on the series and her high school memories. . .

Christmas Present
My role on the soap Edgemont did help me get the role of Lana. My drama teacher asked for participants for a casting call for Edgemont. The Smallville producers had heard of the series. They sent my tape to Los Angeles for viewing. Finally, in December, a few days before Christmas, they asked me to come down and do a reading. Being chosen for the role of Lana was the most beautiful gift I could have been given.

Two Lana's
It is funny working with Annette because she has embodied Lana Lang in the theatre for 20 years and they don't want us to speak about it. God knows, however, that we talk a lot. I often ask for her counsel, not on my character but rather on day to day things, such as this scene or that. She is a person I really admire.

Reddish Brown Hair?
I knew little about the character of Lana prior to starting the series. Her character has one of the most varied histories. The only thing that never changed was her hair color. In fact, she was always portrayed as having long reddish brown hair. Many fans have written to complain about this difference. Me, I understand them, I would love to have reddish brown hair. (laughs)

Evolution
I hope Lana will continue to evolve. She is not always honest with herself which has the tendency to create suffering. She sometimes has a hard time making choices. She does not follow her heart enough. It is simple, I think Lana needs to continue to grow up. The future will say if the writers chose to follow this direction. . .

She is Afraid
I still live with my parents in Vancouver. A TV series like Smallville is a true challenge for me. But, I've been able to juggle some things and continue to do things as I used to. I've never had a serious boyfriend, I don't drink alcohol and I am fairly shy. After that, I'll let you imagine the difficulty of balancing the enormous success of the series and the growing popularity of Lana. Sometimes it is difficult, but I think it is the only means of progressing in this trade.

Good Student
Unlike Lana, I was never popular in high school. What interested me was studying and getting good grades. Everything else was secondary. The problem with high school is that people tend to judge you for your outward appearance. Thus, it feels necessary to be popular. I found that stupid. I really hate frivolity and materialism.

Shy and Modest
I have never liked to have my photo taken and when I must for a magazine I have a certain fear. I am rather modest and it puts me ill at ease to think of men looking at my photographs without considering my head. But, the sexy photos don't bother me more than the others, if they are artistic.
