Kristin not being able to pull off the look for "Partition"

Kristin not being able to pull off the look for "Partition"

Posted by Webmistress on 2005-03-06

There's been a lot of people saying that Kristin can't pull off the Muslim/Indian/Pakistani look for Partition. Will I'll like to come in defense to Kristin and clear some things about Muslim women and Indian/Pakistani women.

First of all, Muslim women don't have a look, since it’s a belief not a race.

Second, Indian/Pakistani women just don't have one look, stereotyping is bad.

I put together a collage of different Indian and Pakistani actresses and threw Kristin into it:

I believe this collage speaks for itself and hopefully clears whatever confusion people may have.

All I want to say is that Kristin is an excellent actress and the movie will be better received in the US if there is a better-known cast. The director should have that option, in any case. I can't wait to see it myself.

BTW, Halle Berry usually plays in black roles, but she is half black and half white. Should that disqualify her to play a black woman. No.

Let's leave race out of it and judge by acting ability, shall we?

Did we ever find out a release date?

All the webmaster is trying to say is that due to the fact that there is not a definitive look for the region and that Kristin could play the role from a visual point of view. If you bring up the fact that there are actresses who are from the region and should have gotten the role, why should a director have to limit himself or herself for the fact that there are indian and pakistani actresses who need roles. There are other factors to consider when casting - one of them being, if you pick a more well known person, it is more likely to make more MONEY - which is what making movies is about. And besides, are you saying that every movie should be cast authentically? So Mel Gibson cannot play and American because he is Austrailian? The people who are making the movies have the final say, when you make a movie, you can cast who you want

I have just come across these posts and the only thing I can say as an Indian girl myself is that what angers me is not whether Kristin looks asian or not its the fact that there are many indian/pakistani actors looking for roles and getting knocked back for people like Kristin. ok, that is not her fault but surely you can understand our anger. Why get her to do it when there are loads of beautiful indian/pakistani girls out there!

I think you guys are asking the wrong questions about the movie. Instead of asking why the hell they put in a half asian half white actor in the movie, shouldn't you be asking whether or not the movie was good? Whether or not the movie got it's point across... Cause frankly I'm more concerned about watching a good movie than the race of the actor I'm watching.

the point is, this movie is not supposed to represent people who KINDA look like this race. you wouldnt cast a latina into a chinese movie because she has SOME of those asian features. they should look for the stereotype of the ethnicity. just because she deserves the role doesn't necessarily mean she should have it

you guys are all a bunch of racist pricks... what the hell does it matter, huh? She's beautiful and can handle the part. Why dont you guys hold off on your "holier than thou" bs comments and see the film first, and than whine... and as far as I'm concerened Kristin seems to fit in very well with all the other actressesnin the poster..

FYI: there is pretty significant difference between indians and pakistanis! and Kristin is playing the part of a Pakistani Muslim. i agree with "ME" that we're just ticked off because shes playing the part of a muslim in an international movie and the part should have been given to a pakistani muslim. Also, even if she resembles today's indian actresses that doesnt mean taht shes fit for the role! indians are differnt from pakistanis depending on what part they are from( i know this cause im mixed indopak)... and today's actreses are different from poeple in 1947... i just dont like how she isnt muslim, so none of this even would even pertain to her! she cannot relate to the emotional aspect of the independence.

also does anyone else think this movie is just like "Gadar" or "refugee" or "veer zara", where the girl is pakistani and the guy is indian and they cannot love each other because of that differnce? why can't

Give her a break, she looks good in the part. She does have a Indian/Muslim-Arab look to her. She did a good job. And my mom's name is Nasim or Naseem.

I think the reason so many people are angry is because this will be an internationally recognized film, and an Indian/Pakistani is not casted for the role, not necesarily just because of the look, some people might just want more people from the Indian sub-continent to get recognition.
